BACKGROUND

The Canadian Sustainability Standards Board (CSSB) works to advance the adoption of sustainability disclosure standards in Canada. The CSSB develops Canadian Sustainability Disclosure Standards that align with the global baseline standards developed by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) – but with modifications to serve the Canadian public interest.

On January 7, 2025, the CSSB released its Proposed Strategic Plan which is open for public comment until April 7. This document describes the CSSB's proposed mission, vision, and values and outlines five proposed strategic priorities:

  • Establishing the CSSB as the reference source for sustainability disclosure standards in Canada
  • Advancing the inclusion of Indigenous Peoples in sustainability disclosure standard setting
  • Contributing to the development of international sustainability disclosure standards
  • Determining the CSSB's role in developing additional sustainability disclosure standards and/or guidance
  • Advancing effective communications and outreach with interested and affected parties.

HOW WILL THE PROPOSED PLAN AFFECT YOU?

The CSSB's Proposed Strategic Plan seeks to advance its work in carrying out its mission to the benefit of the Canadian public interest. Sharing your comments will ensure your views are considered and reflected in the future of its work.

WHY YOUR INPUT MATTERS

  • Help shape the strategic direction and workplan of the CSSB.
  • Ensure future Canadian sustainability disclosure standards reflect diverse perspectives and real-world needs.
  • Advance quality, consistency, and comparability in sustainability reporting.

ABOUT THE CSSB

The Canadian Sustainability Standards Board (CSSB) became operational in June 2023. It was established with a mission to serve the public interest by setting and maintaining high quality sustainability disclosure standards for Canadian entities and by contributing to the development of international sustainability disclosure standards.

The CSSB works with the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) to support the uptake of ISSB standards in Canada, highlight key issues relevant to the Canadian context, and facilitate interoperability between ISSB standards and Canadian Sustainability Disclosure Standards.
