Millani's eleventh Semi-Annual ESG Sentiment Study of Canadian Institutional Investors finds that current pushback on ESG is less a retreat than a pause, with uncertainty eroding disclosure quality, trust, and ultimately increasing the cost of capital.
Regulatory shifts are front of mind, with Bill C-59 cited as having the greatest impact, followed by the SEC and CSA. At the same time, investors anticipate continued retractions of net-zero targets, viewing them as pragmatic adjustments to changing market conditions rather than a loss of ambition.
